A single address, two different Virginia state agencies - here's how to keep them straight.
Springfield's senior care market, anchored around the Springfield Town Center interchange, includes some of Fairfax County's largest continuing-care campuses - communities that offer independent living, assisted living, and skilled nursing all on one property. That combination is exactly where Virginia's two-agency licensing system matters most.
The assisted living portion of a Springfield continuing-care campus is licensed by the Virginia Department of Social Services (VDSS), Division of Licensing Programs, under 22VAC40-73. The skilled-nursing wing of the same campus is licensed separately by the Virginia Department of Health (VDH), Office of Licensure and Certification. Ask the community directly which VDSS or VDH license number applies to the specific unit your parent would actually live in.
Springfield and nearby South Fairfax County have historically drawn retired military families to larger continuing-care communities in this corridor. The licensing process doesn't differ for military-affiliated campuses - VDSS and VDH apply the same standards regardless of a community's historical ties.
The Fairfax Area Agency on Aging (Division of Adult and Aging Services) covers Springfield, and can route you to the regional ombudsman. For a direct line, the Virginia Office of the State Long-Term Care Ombudsman is reachable at (804) 565-1600.
A free DC-metro advisor can point you to the right jurisdiction, the right regulator, and the right ombudsman - no guesswork.
